Overview
Description
The XZZ MPS Offline Laptop Chip Programmer is a specialized repair tool built for reading, writing, and reprogramming MPS (Monolithic Power Systems) power management chips found on laptop, server, and telecom motherboards. It's designed specifically for technicians dealing with boot failures, power sequencing faults, and other issues traced back to a faulty core power monitor IC, giving them a way to recover or reprogram these chips without a full board teardown.
What sets this tool apart is its dual-mode design. In online mode, jumper wires connect directly to the target motherboard, allowing in-circuit programming while the chip stays soldered in place. This is the faster path when the board is accessible and the chip doesn't need to be removed. In offline mode, the chip is desoldered and mounted directly onto the programmer's own board, which is useful for chips that are difficult to access in-circuit or when a board-level short is interfering with programming. Having both options on one tool means a technician isn't limited to a single workflow depending on the repair scenario.
Communication with the target chip happens through a simple 3-pin connection carrying ground, SDA, and SCL lines, following the PMBus/I2C-style protocol that most MPS power monitor ICs use. The accompanying software handles chip identification automatically: after connecting to a powered-on target, a scan function detects the chip and reports its PMBus address and vendor ID, which removes much of the guesswork that comes with manually cross-referencing pinouts for unfamiliar chip variants.
The chip support list is extensive, covering notebook core power monitors such as the MP2940, MP2942, MP2945, and MP2950 series, along with server and telecom-grade power monitors like the MP2888, MP2965, MP5023, and MP5920 families. It also reaches into computing and telecom core chips including the MP2971, MP2880, MP2985, and MPQ2977 series, among others. This breadth makes it applicable well beyond consumer laptops, extending into server motherboard and telecom equipment repair where MPS power ICs are common.
For repair shops, the practical value comes down to avoiding board replacement when a power monitor chip fails or loses its configuration data. Instead of swapping an entire motherboard over a single faulty PMIC, technicians can read a known-good chip's data, write it to a replacement, or attempt in-circuit recovery directly. That makes the XZZ MPS Programmer a focused, cost-effective addition to a bench that already handles laptop and server-board level repair.
